Newport Beach, CA – Today, Newport Beach City Council candidate, Dr. Andy Gerken, responds to the aftermath of last night’s 4th of July festivities:
“I was saddened this morning to read about the violence and disorder in Newport Beach last night in the wake of our Fourth of July festivities. This was beyond disheartening, and absolutely unacceptable. What should have been a celebration of our nation’s beginnings, our liberties, and community became the setting for the irresponsible actions of individuals who exhibited a blatant lack of respect for our city, our residents, and our laws.
I strongly condemn the violence, property damage, and disruptive activity that placed our public safety in danger, and desecrated one of Newport Beach’s most cherished events. Let me be clear: this conduct has no place in our community.
My sincerest appreciation goes out to the men and women of the Newport Beach Police Department for their professionalism and bravery that restored order and kept our residents and visitors safe during these challenging circumstances. I also want to acknowledge our city’s sanitation and public works crews who worked throughout the night and into today. Their work ensured our beautiful city was ready to welcome our residents and visitors again today.
As a candidate for Newport Beach City Council, I pledge to continue our efforts to support first responders, hold those responsible for criminal conduct fully accountable and maintain Newport Beach as a safe, welcoming place for families to gather and celebrate.
We are greater than those individuals whose intentions were to create disorder and we will continue to safeguard the qualities, security, and esteem that we so value in our community.”
- Dr. Andy Gerken, Candidate for Newport Beach City Council.
