<h2 style="text-align: center;">Hi, I'm Andy!</h2><img src="https://run.imgix.net/3fd86dba-b143-40dc-82ac-dd15f78c5eed/1ef8fbf7-e523-4a31-a304-2a359a09f89e/1ef8fbf7-e523-4a31-a304-2a359a09f89e.jpg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C4972%2C7476&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">I've been an Orthopedic Surgeon at Hoag Memorial Hospital since 1998, focusing on complex joint surgeries, patient care, and developing new treatment approaches that have meaningfully improved patients' lives.I was honored to serve twice as Chair of the Hospital's Orthopedic Department, where I worked to advance surgical techniques and patient outcomes while building a collaborative atmosphere among medical staff.I also served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at UC Irvine, teaching and mentoring the next generation of orthopedic surgeons.<h4>As a physician, I've spent my career listening carefully, evaluating facts, and making decisions that prioritize people's well-being. I intend to bring that same thoughtful, disciplined approach to city government.</h4>For those who don't know me, my connection to Newport Beach goes back more than 50 years.In 1972, my father helped bring Pacific Life from Los Angeles to Newport Beach and later played a key role in the development of PIMCO. He was also instrumental in establishing the Hoag Foundation. Long before I understood what any of that meant, I was growing up here, learning the values of service, community, and giving back.I started fifth grade in Spyglass Hill, attended Corona del Mar High School, served as class president, earned straight A's, and set a two-mile track record that still stands today. Those experiences taught me the importance of hard work, discipline, and leadership.After graduating from CDM, I attended Harvard University, where I captained the cross-country team. It was an honor to earn the trust of my teammates and learn what it means to lead by example.<h4>But Newport Beach was always home.</h4>I returned to California to attend the University of California, Irvine, where I spent nine years completing medical school and orthopedic training. During medical school, my classmates elected me student body president, and together we successfully advocated for improvements that benefited every student. It was an early lesson that good leadership begins with listening, identifying problems, and bringing people together to solve them.Following additional specialty training in Texas and Colorado, my wife and I made the decision to return home to Newport Beach in 1998. For the next 24 years, I had the privilege of caring for thousands of patients as an orthopedic surgeon at Hoag Hospital. I served twice as Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics, held leadership positions within Newport Orthopedic Institute, and helped establish governance structures for a new orthopedic specialty hospital in Irvine.Beyond my medical career, I have always believed in giving back to the community that has given so much to me and my family. For nearly 20 years, I volunteered as the team physician for Corona del Mar High School football, spending countless Friday nights on the sidelines helping keep our student-athletes safe. I've raised a family here, built a career here, volunteered here, and invested my life in this community. Fair Game by Tom JohnsonNewport Beach, CA - Retired Hoag Memorial Hospital Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Andy Gerken announced his candidacy this week to represent District 6 residents on the Newport Beach City Council.“I am running for City Council because the current District 6 council incumbent is totally out of touch with Newport Beach residents,” said Dr. Gerken, a long-time resident of Corona del Mar.“Mayor Kleiman’s recent vote to support moving our police station and jail to the Civic Center Park is a disaster for our beautiful community,” added Gerken. “As a fiscal conservative, I find this decision to be one of the most financially irresponsible actions ever undertaken by our city council.“At an estimated cost of $200 million, Kleiman’s decision to re-locate the police station jail to our beloved Civic Center Park would be the most expensive project in the city’s history,” continued Gerken. “It would needlessly take resources away from city law enforcement and public safety services to spend on avoidable environmental mitigation and site preparation costs.“Worse, Kleiman’s actions would jeopardize the safety of families visiting the park by placing them in close proximity to criminals being released from the city jail,” stated Gerken. “Moreover, the overwhelming sentiment of our residents is that putting our jail in a park is just the wrong thing to do. Despite widespread public outcry against the police station relocation, Mayor Kleinman simply ignored the people of Newport Beach.“It’s time for a city councilmember who will listen to residents and put the safety of Newport Beach families ahead of financial profits of developers who wish to build a high-rise on the current police station property,” said Gerken.The Gerken family moved to Newport Beach in 1972, the same year where Andy’s father, Walter Gerken, relocated Pacific Life from Los Angeles to Newport Beach. Today, Pacific Life and PIMCO&nbsp;are among the city’s largest employers.Andy is a graduate of Corona del Mar High School in 1980, and then went on to earn his college degree at Harvard University and his Medical Degree at UC Irvine, where he also served as Student Body President.Gerken practiced orthopedic surgery at Hoag Memorial Hospital for 24 years and was part of the development of Newport Orthopedic Institute and Hoag Orthopedic Institute. He volunteered as the CdM High School football team doctor for two decades. That’s why I strongly support Dr. Andrew Gerken for City Council District 6.Dr. Gerken is a longtime Newport Beach resident and a respected orthopedic surgeon who served our community for more than two decades at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. His record reflects a lifetime of service, not politics.In contrast, recent decisions by Mayor Lauren Kleiman –particularly the push to relocate a police station and jail to Civic Center Park at an estimated $200 million cost – are deeply concerning. Dr. Andy Gerken is a well-respected orthopedic surgeon in Newport, and I think he would be an excellent city councilman to replace Ms. Kleiman.In the last few years, I’ve seen an evolution of a “we know best” attitude among most of the councilmembers, culminating with the current push to move the NB Police HQ and jail to the park adjacent to the city hall. This decision makes exactly zero sense for the residents, since the current Police HQ site is fully owned by the city and is large enough to build a spacious new building for our police force.Building the new building in the Civic Center Park is more expensive, more disruptive and will place the NB jail adjacent to the library and city hall. Where exactly do you think that the drunks and miscreants will go when they are released from the “jail in the park?” I’m guessing the library will be a very attractive place to hang out.When a huge crowd of residents showed up to express their concerns about this to the council, they were effectively shut out and shut up by the incumbents, who appear to think that they don’t have to pay attention to their voters.We need councilmembers who actually value the opinion of their constituents and will act in their best interests.
